CHAPTER 4

“What are we doing now?” Vi asked as they dumped the three giggling girls on the garden in front of their little cottage. None of them had taken it, and they didn’t have a key, but Jack simply pointed out the pub and the small teashop and then he seated her back into the auto.

They sped away and towards the house that Rita had arranged. They weren’t staying at the big house, and Vi was glad of it. She figured that the big house would be where the dramatics ensued and there was always a level of chaos associated with house parties.

People slipping into other people’s beds, too often someone else’s spouse. There would also be jealousies, drunken episodes—too often with tears. Violet took a deep breath in and told Jack, “I want to see Smith with those girls.”

“That’s one of the reasons you’re a demon.”

“Am I?” Vi grinned evilly.

Jack was her main target for abandoning her after the dancing, but Smith was on her list as well. She thought those drunk twins would be perfect. She made a note of where the girls lived and turned away from Jack. He’d notice her humor and guess she was going to take the the idle thought to fruition.

Violet commented on the sky and then the trees just to keep him off the scent. They reached the house they’d taken with the others. It was a big place, it had to be with all of their friends. They’d been beaten to the house by everyone else and when they walked inside, Vi sat on her twin’s lap, wrapped her arm around his neck, and told him, “I’m glad you’re my twin.”

Victor lifted his legs and let them drop, making her bounce on him.

“We met the most horrible twins,” Vi told him. “They sang.”

“Did they?”

“They did.”

I lifted a brow at Rita and let my gaze barely stray to Smith. Rita’s head tilted and then she winked with the eye Smith couldn’t see.

“So tell me about this friend of yours.”

Rita rolled her eyes. “I just met her somewhere. She wants you to come.”

“Me?” Vi asked, feeling as though she’d been sucked into a trap.

“Not just you,” Rita said, grinning widely.

It was only in that moment that she realized Rita had pulled her own trick on all of us.

“Not just me?”

“You know Emily Allen likes to write scathing articles about the crimes you guys solve.”

“So?” Beatrice demanded.

“She likes you and Smith almost as much as she likes hating Violet.”

“I’m very lovable,” Violet told Rita. “And what have you done?”

“So, this friend is having the murder game.”

“So?” Vi said.

“And she knows about you five.”

“Wait,” Denny hissed. “Are we not included in this? I should be included.”

“Who is included?” Beatrice asked, but we all knew.

“You, Smith, Jack, Ham, and Vi.”

“This is dumb,” Vi said.

“Emily is going to be here.” Rita laughed harder, cackling too much.

“Oh dear,” Kate said, whispering low.

“Emily Allen?” Vi demanded.

Rita snorted with laughter.

“You are evil,” Lila said, but she was laughing. Almost giggling too hard to speak.
